Phone Scams

Alert message sent 12/06/2019 14:09:00

Information sent on behalf of Police Scotland

Scammers are crooks who pretend to be someone else.

Watch out for these phone scams

You’re due a refund; you have a virus on your computer; we’re doing a security check; we’ve detected fraud on your account; you’ve won a competition/lottery; you have an unpaid bill.

All call unexpectedly; they will ask for bank or credit card details or ask you to buy Amazon tokens or iTunes. They will ask you to act quickly. They may be pleasant and plausible or abrupt and officious.

The caller might say they are from your Utility Company, Broadband Provider, Bank, HMRC, TV Licensing, Council etc.

The scammer’s one objective is to part you from your money.

How to protect yourself from the phone scammers

Keep calm and don’t allow yourself to get drawn in to providing personal information, especially bank or credit card details and don’t disclose whether you live alone or your age bracket.

Just say “No thank you, I’m not interested” and hang up.

You could ask your phone provider if they can provide a Call Protect facility. This would allow you to dial 1572 or similar, to block the last number that called you.

If you have a Caller Display, check this before answering. Watch out for “number withheld” and” international number”.

You could purchase a Call Blocker to intercept calls and deter scammers or you may be eligible to apply for a Call Blocker on a long term loan from P&K Health and Social Care Partnership - available free of charge to vulnerable people in the community.

Call Blocker

trueCall Call Blocker is like having a home receptionist who lets calls from your friends and family straight through, blocks unwelcome callers, and asks unrecognised callers to identify themselves before it puts them through. This gives you peace and quiet at home.
TrueCall Call Blocker is easy to set up – you just plug it in between your phone and the wall socket and it quickly learns who you like to speak to and who you don’t. You decide how you want it to handle your calls, and trueCall Call Blocker does the rest.

For more details contact Audra Webster, Project Officer, Healthy Communities tel. 07896 280852.
It might be worth registering with the Telephone Preference Service to opt out of receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls. This is free.  Phone 03450 700707 or register at

Consider making your phone number ex-directory.

NEVER give out your credit card or bank card number to strangers on the phone. NEVER tell someone your PIN number, even if they say they are from your Bank or the Police. NEVER send money or tokens to anyone who claims to have a prize for you and NEVER give a caller you don’t know and trust access to your computer.

If you have been the victim of a scam/suspected scam, please report this to Action Fraud at or phone the Police on 101.
